I want fewer weeds and a finished look → Hardwood or cedar mulch at 2–3 in. Add fabric only where appropriate (not in annual beds).

Mulch & Soil

2 cu ft bag at 2 in depth → ≈ 12 sq ft

2 cu ft bag at 3 in depth → ≈ 8 sq ft

3 cu ft bag at 2 in depth → ≈ 18 sq ft

3 cu ft bag at 3 in depth → ≈ 12 sq ft

Decorative Stone & Gravel (40 lb bags, size dependent)

~2 in depth → ≈ 3 sq ft per bag

~3 in depth → ≈ 2 sq ft per bag

Coverage varies with particle size and compaction. Add 10–15% for cuts, curves, and settling.

Simple Formula

Bags needed = (Area in sq ft × Depth in inches) ÷ (Bag volume in cu ft × 12)

Example: 120 sq ft bed at 3 in using 2 cu ft mulch → (120×3) ÷ (2×12) = 15 bags.

Mulches Explained

Hardwood mulch: All‑around performer for shrubs and trees. Breaks down to enrich soil over time. Natural brown color blends with most landscapes.
Cedar mulch: Pleasant aroma, slow to break down, and helps resist some pests. Good around ornamentals and pathways.
Color‑enhanced mulch: Dyed options (black, brown, red) give consistent color. Rinse hard surfaces after install to avoid tint transfer.
Shredded vs chips: Shredded locks together on slopes. Chips or nuggets offer a more textured look but can migrate on grade.

Depth guide: 2 in for décor, 3 in for weed suppression. Keep mulch a few inches away from trunks and stems.

Soils & Mixes Explained

Topsoil: Base layer or leveling. Limited nutrients. Blend with compost for planting.
Garden soil: Balanced media for in‑ground beds. Often includes organic matter.
Potting mix: For containers. Lightweight with peat/coir and perlite for drainage.
Compost: Nutrient‑rich amendment. Use 1–2 in as a top‑dress or blend 20–30% into beds.
Expanded shale: Lightweight, porous aggregate that opens heavy clay and improves root oxygenation. Excellent in raised beds and perennials.

Raised‑bed starting recipe: 50% garden soil, 30% compost, 20% expanded shale. Adjust to plant needs.

Stone, Gravel & DG Explained

Pea gravel (3/8 in, rounded): Comfortable underfoot, great for seating areas and play spaces. Needs edging to contain.
Blackstar/Crushed granite (angular): Dark, modern look with better interlock than rounded stone.
River rock (1–3 in): Decorative and durable, ideal for dry creek beds and splash zones near downspouts.
Decomposed granite (DG): Fines + small aggregate that compacts into a firm path. Install over fabric on a compacted base for best results.

Angular vs rounded: Angular stone locks in place and is better on slopes. Rounded stone shifts more easily but is comfortable and decorative.
